Busan in Winter: Jagalchi, Gijang Snow Crab, the Christmas Tree Festival and Getting There from Seoul with Luggage

Get an instant luggage delivery quote Get a Quote

Busan in winter is mild by Korean standards (the city puts the average at 3.8°C) and best for seafood and street lights: Jagalchi Market (05:00–22:00), Gijang Market's snow crab, then the lights on Gwangbok-ro in Nampo-dong. Last winter that festival ran from 5 December 2025 to 22 February 2026, and the 2026 dates are not out yet. From Seoul the KTX takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours (₩54,400). Your suitcases can go from your Seoul hotel to your Busan hotel the same day.

Key takeaways

What to do in Busan in winter: seafood markets and Christmas lights

A winter trip to Busan means seafood by day and street lights after dark, in two areas: Nampo-dong, the old downtown a few subway stops from the KTX station, and Haeundae and Gijang on the east side.

What Where When Getting there
Jagalchi Market Nampo-dong (Jung-gu) 05:00–22:00; closed 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesdays Subway Line 1, Nampo or Jagalchi station
Gijang Market (snow crab) Gijang-eup, northeast Busan 06:00–21:00; closed last Tuesday of the month Donghae Line to Gijang Station
Gwangbok-ro Winter Light Tree Festival Gwangbok-ro, Nampo-dong 2025–26: 5 Dec–22 Feb, 17:30–22:00 Subway Line 1, Nampo station
Haeundae Light Festival Haeundae Beach and Gunam-ro 2025–26: 29 Nov–18 Jan, 18:00–23:00 Subway Line 2, Haeundae station

Jagalchi Market in winter: opening hours, closing days and what to eat

Jagalchi Market is open daily from 05:00 to 22:00, except on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesdays of the month, according to Visit Busan. Inside the modern building are tanks of live fish and shellfish; outside, stalls line the alleys along the water.

Pick seafood at a ground-floor stall and have it cooked at a restaurant upstairs; agree on the price and cooking charge before anything is weighed.

Getting to Jagalchi from Busan Station

Take subway Line 1 from Busan Station for three stops (Jungang, Nampo, Jagalchi), then walk about 6 minutes from Exit 2 of Nampo station or Exit 10 of Jagalchi station. Gwangbok-ro and its winter lights are a short walk north of the market, so you can do both in one afternoon and evening.

Gijang snow crab: when is crab season in Busan?

Winter is snow crab season in Busan, and Gijang Market is the best-known place to eat it. In its 2017 winter market programme, Busan City listed snow crab as Gijang Market's signature dish.

Gijang is a coastal county of Busan beyond Haeundae. Its tourism site says the market is open 06:00–21:00 and closes on the last Tuesday of each month (street stalls excepted). Gijang Station on the Donghae Line is a short walk away. Prices change with the catch and from shop to shop, so ask before you order.

Gijang's seafood calendar: crab in winter, anchovies in spring

Gijang's famous anchovies are a spring catch, not a winter one; the county site lists seaweed and anchovies in spring and hairtail in autumn.

Season What Gijang is known for Event
Winter (Dec–Feb) Snow crab at Gijang Market No major festival
Spring Anchovies, seaweed (miyeok and kelp) Gijang Anchovy Festival at Daebyeon Port, usually in April (2026: 24–26 April)
Autumn Hairtail, about two months either side of Chuseok —

Busan Christmas Tree Festival 2026 in Nampo-dong: dates and what to expect

The 2026 Gwangbok-ro festival will probably open between late November and early December; the dates haven't been announced. The 2025–26 edition ran from 5 December 2025 to 22 February 2026. The Busan City events calendar listed lighting hours of 17:30–22:00 along Gwangbok-ro and Gwangbokjungang-ro. For the 2026 dates, watch Jung-gu Office and its official blog.

Still widely called the Busan Christmas Tree Culture Festival, it is now the Gwangbok-ro Winter Light Tree Festival, run by Jung-gu Office. The 2025 edition had a large main tree with changing light effects, light installations over each section of the street, photo zones, and performances and hands-on activities at weekends.

Haeundae Light Festival

Haeundae-gu runs its own festival on the beach side: the 12th edition ran from 29 November 2025 to 18 January 2026 on Haeundae Beach and Gunam-ro, with lights on from 18:00 to 23:00 and free entry. The 2026 dates will be announced by Haeundae-gu Office; last season's details are on Busan City's events calendar.

How to get to Busan from Seoul in winter with luggage

The easiest way from Seoul to Busan is the KTX. The fastest trains reach Busan Station in about 2 hours 20 minutes, and trains with more stops take up to about 3 hours. A standard-class ticket costs ₩54,400. Since 1 September 2026, the former SRT trains from Suseo Station in Gangnam have run as KTX and are sold on Korail and the Korail+ app. Korail's terms allow each passenger up to two items that don't take up a seat or block the aisle. Large suitcases go in the shared luggage space between carriages, first come, first served.

Winter coats and Christmas shopping make bags fuller than usual. For the full rules and Seoul Station versus Suseo, see Seoul to Busan with Luggage: KTX Rules, Where Big Suitcases Go, and Same-Day Hotel Delivery.

Day Where you are What happens to your luggage
1–3 Land at Incheon, stay in Seoul Stays at your Seoul hotel
4 Morning KTX to Busan, afternoon at Jagalchi, evening on Gwangbok-ro Left at your Seoul hotel front desk before your 09:00–11:00 pickup, reaches your Busan hotel by 21:00
5 Day trip to Gijang for snow crab Stays at your Busan hotel
6 Last morning in Busan, then fly home from Incheon in the evening Goes from your Busan hotel to Incheon Airport ahead of you

From Europe, North America or Australia, most long-haul trips start at Incheon; Gimhae's international flights are mostly within Asia. Australians coming in their summer holidays should pack a proper coat: the sea wind feels colder than the thermometer says.

Flying straight into Gimhae Airport

Travellers from Taiwan, Japan and elsewhere in Asia can often fly straight into Busan's Gimhae Airport (PUS). Transport options are compared in Gimhae Airport to Haeundae or Seomyeon, Then On to Seoul: Flying into Busan with Luggage. For Nampo-dong and Jagalchi, a taxi from the airport is simplest with big bags. The rail route needs changes at Sasang and Seomyeon.

Meeting LuggAgent at Gimhae Airport

There's no LuggAgent counter at Gimhae Airport; after baggage claim, our agent meets you in person. LuggAgent's meeting-point guide for Gimhae describes it as the international terminal, 1st floor, Exit Gate 1: turn left after the gate, and the meeting point is in front of the vehicle pick-up area. The exact point for your booking is in your confirmation email; look for the LuggAgent sign, and send a photo of your luggage before you get there so the agent can spot you.

How to use LuggAgent (3 steps)

  1. Book your route. Choose your route and date, and enter your hotel or flight details. Sending luggage from Seoul to Busan and on to the airport

The hard part of a winter trip to Busan is changing cities with full suitcases: the KTX luggage space can't be reserved, Haeundae hotels mean a subway change at Seomyeon, and check-in is usually mid-afternoon.

Bags you leave at your Seoul hotel's front desk before your 09:00–11:00 pickup time reach your Busan hotel by 21:00 the same day, or by 18:00 with priority delivery. On long routes like Seoul to Busan, at least 9 hours are needed between pickup and delivery, and within Busan at least 3 hours. Each bag can be up to 180 cm (length + width + height) and 32 kg. Large items can be up to 250 cm and 25 kg.

If you're riding the KTX from Seoul, send your bags from your Seoul hotel to your Busan hotel the same day:
