Things to Do Near New Chitose Airport: Chitose Aquarium and Lake Shikotsu on Arrival or Departure Day
The easiest side trip from New Chitose Airport is Chitose city. The JR Rapid Airport train takes about six minutes and costs ¥290 to Chitose Station. From there it's a 15-minute walk to the Chitose Aquarium, where windows look straight onto the bed of the Chitose River and, in autumn, onto salmon swimming upstream. A bus ride of about an hour farther on brings you to Lake Shikotsu, Japan's northernmost ice-free lake. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the aquarium and 3–4 hours for the lake, so either fits into an arrival or departure day. The catch is luggage: an infrequent lakeside bus is no place for a big suitcase.
A travel enclave is LuggAgent's name for a town right next to an airport that most travellers pass straight through. Hand your luggage to LuggAgent on arrival or departure day and you can explore it hands-free for half a day — an airport side trip.
Key takeaways
- New Chitose Airport to Chitose Station takes about 6 minutes and costs ¥290. Rapid Airport trains run six times an hour in the daytime, and the fastest reach Sapporo in 33 minutes.
- Chitose Aquarium is open 9:00–17:00 from March to November, with shorter winter hours of 10:00–16:00. Admission is ¥800 for adults, ¥500 for high-school students and ¥300 for primary and junior-high pupils.

- The 2027 Chitose-Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is scheduled for January 30 to February 23, open 10:00–20:00 with illuminations from 16:30.
What is there to do near New Chitose Airport? 3 half-day trips compared
The three side trips differ in distance and season: the aquarium is closest and works all year, Lake Shikotsu is about scenery (with an ice festival in winter), and Mitsui Outlet Park suits a last shopping stop.

Chitose Aquarium: watch salmon in the river through a window
The Chitose Salmon Aquarium (Sake no Furusato Chitose Suizokukan) is Hokkaido's largest freshwater aquarium. It opened in 1994, was renovated in 2015 and stands inside the Michi-no-Eki Salmon Park Chitose roadside station. Its highlight is the underwater observation zone on the lower floor. Here, a wall of windows looks directly onto the bed of the Chitose River: not a tank, but the real river (Chitose Aquarium).
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Regular hours | 9:00–17:00 (March to November) |

When can you see the salmon run?
The salmon run peaks from September to November, with October the busiest month. According to the aquarium's daily catch figures, October 2025 often saw more than 1,000 salmon a day, falling to a few dozen to a few hundred a day by early December.
The Indian water wheel: a fish trap that only appears in autumn
Each autumn an "Indian water wheel" fish trap is set up on the Chitose River next to the aquarium. Turned by the current, it scoops salmon swimming upstream into a holding tank, catching about 200,000 parent fish a year for hatchery release. It's hatchery work, not a show, so you may not catch it running.

How do you get to Lake Shikotsu from New Chitose Airport?
From New Chitose Airport you can reach Lake Shikotsu on Hokkaido Chuo Bus route Kū 4 (Shikotsuko Line), which runs through central Chitose to the lakeshore. The ride takes about an hour and there are only a few buses a day. By car it's about 40–50 minutes (Hokkaido Chuo Bus). Check the last bus back first; if you miss it, the only option is a taxi.
Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. At about 360 m deep it is Japan's second-deepest lake, and it rarely freezes even in winter, which is why it's called Japan's northernmost ice-free lake. The small Shikotsuko Onsen hot-spring village on the shore has restaurants, a sightseeing-boat pier and the red Yamasen iron bridge. Across the water rise Mt. Fuppushi and Mt. Eniwa.

Winter only: the Chitose-Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival
At the Chitose-Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival, sprayed and frozen lake water forms ice caves and towers, lit in colour at night. According to Hokkaido's official tourism site, the 2027 festival is scheduled for January 30 to February 23 at Shikotsuko Onsen on the lakeshore. It's open 10:00–20:00 with illuminations from 16:30, and admission is charged (free for primary-school age and under). Ticket prices change every year, so check the organiser's announcements.

Is Chitose Outlet Rera still open? Go to Mitsui Outlet Park instead
Chitose Outlet Mall Rera is no longer worth a special trip. The outlet opened next to Minami-Chitose Station in 2005. In November 2024 its operator notified the authorities that it was ending operations as a large commercial facility, and by late 2025 only about three shops were still trading. Ignore older guides that mention a free airport shuttle to Rera.
For outlet shopping near the airport, head to Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima in Kitahiroshima instead. A direct airport bus from New Chitose Airport takes a little over 30 minutes, and there are also direct buses from Sapporo Station. Shops open 10:00–20:00 and restaurants 11:00–21:00 (Mitsui Outlet Park).
How should you plan arrival and departure days? Chitose half-day itineraries
Allow 3–5 hours including travel: on arrival day, see Chitose first and reach Sapporo by evening; on departure day, start from Sapporo and fly out in the evening.
Arrival day: land in the morning, see Chitose, then go to Sapporo
- After baggage claim, deal with your luggage first (hand it to a delivery service for your Sapporo hotel, or store it at the airport).
- Take JR from New Chitose Airport Station to Chitose Station (about 6 minutes), then walk about 15 minutes to Chitose Aquarium.
- After the underwater windows, have lunch at the Michi-no-Eki Salmon Park Chitose next door.
- Walk back to Chitose Station and take the Rapid Airport to Sapporo, about 30 minutes.
Departure day: leave Sapporo, see Chitose, then fly
- Check out of your Sapporo hotel in the morning and hand your bags to the front desk or a delivery service to go straight to New Chitose Airport.
- Ride the Rapid Airport hands-free to Chitose Station (about 30 minutes), then visit the aquarium or have lunch in town.
- Take JR from Chitose Station back to the airport, about 6 minutes.
- Arrive at the airport by the time your airline recommends. From November 1, 2026, Japan refunds consumption tax at departure, and you must take the goods to a customs terminal at the airport before bag drop (Japan Tourism Agency), so allow extra time.
What to do with luggage around Chitose and Lake Shikotsu: 3 options compared
Exploring Chitose with big luggage is the hardest part: the Lake Shikotsu bus runs only a few times a day, and in winter you'd be dragging a suitcase through snow. There are three common options, and the right one depends on whether you're going back to the airport or on to Sapporo afterwards.
| Option | How your bags travel | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store them at a locker or storage counter at New Chitose Airport | Left at the terminal and collected when you return | Transit passengers, or anyone flying out after the trip | Hours and fees vary by operator; on arrival day you'd have to go back to the airport before heading to Sapporo |
| Carry them or find a station locker | Wheel them with you, or look for a locker at Chitose Station | Travellers with small bags only | Large lockers aren't always free, and space on the Lake Shikotsu bus is limited |
| Send them straight to your Sapporo hotel or the airport | Handed over at the airport or hotel, delivered to your next stop | Arrival day ending in Sapporo, or departure day starting from Sapporo | Book in advance and note the handover and delivery times |
LuggAgent takes your bags straight to your next stop. On arrival day, hand them to an agent holding a LuggAgent sign in the international terminal arrivals hall and head to Chitose or Lake Shikotsu hands-free; they'll reach the front desk of your Sapporo hotel by 21:00 the same day (or by 18:00 with priority delivery). On departure day, hand them over at your hotel and they'll be delivered to New Chitose Airport (we recommend a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs), with photos taken at both pickup and delivery. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or guesthouse, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one, send the full address and entry details (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 local time on the service day, and you don't need to be there. Allow at least three hours between pickup and delivery. The service area covers Sapporo, Otaru and the New Chitose Airport area; see Sapporo & Otaru luggage delivery.
If you want to visit Chitose Aquarium or Lake Shikotsu on arrival day and reach Sapporo in the evening, hand your bags over in the international terminal arrivals hall and they'll go ahead to your Sapporo hotel:
If you want to see Chitose before your flight home, hand your bags over when you check out of your Sapporo hotel and they'll go straight to New Chitose Airport:

JR from New Chitose Airport Station to Chitose Station takes about 6 minutes and costs ¥290, then it's about a 15-minute (900 m) walk to the aquarium, roughly 30 minutes in total. By car or taxi it's about 15 minutes.
Is Chitose Outlet Rera still open?
Barely. Chitose Outlet Mall Rera effectively shut down in November 2024, and by late 2025 only about three shops were left. For outlet shopping near the airport, go to Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima, a little over 30 minutes from New Chitose Airport by airport bus.
What do I do with my luggage if I want to see Chitose on departure day?
If you're starting from a Sapporo hotel, hand your bags to LuggAgent at checkout and they'll be delivered to New Chitose Airport (we recommend a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs), so you can explore hands-free and go to the airport afterwards.
