Kyoto Autumn Leaves Without the Crowds: Ohara, Kurama, Daigo-ji and Uji, Hands-Free
To see Kyoto's autumn leaves without the crowds, swap Arashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera for Ohara, Kurama, Daigo-ji and Uji. Kyoto City's official foliage guide gives Sanzen-in in Ohara a usual peak of early November to early December, and Kurama-dera and Daigo-ji mid to late November. All four are reachable by train or subway, so you can skip the packed city buses. Base yourself in Uji (16 minutes from Kyoto by JR rapid) or Osaka, and send big bags straight to your hotel: Kyoto City explicitly asks visitors not to bring large luggage onto its buses.
Key takeaways
- Kyoto City's usual peak dates: Sanzen-in early November to early December, Jakko-in mid-November to early December, Kurama-dera mid to late November, Kifune Shrine mid-November, Daigo-ji mid to late November.
- The Japan Weather Association's first 2026 forecast on tenki.jp (1 October) expects Arashiyama to peak from 13 November, the same as last year, with most of western Japan around normal or later.
- Kyoto City asks passengers not to bring suitcases onto city buses; drivers can restrict very large bags.
- Ohara is about 56 minutes from Kyoto Station by subway and bus; Kurama about 30 minutes from Demachiyanagi by Eizan Railway; Daigo-ji a 10-minute walk from Daigo subway station.
- Uji, outside Kyoto City, is about 16 minutes from Kyoto by JR rapid; from Osaka, the Keihan line runs straight to Demachiyanagi for Kurama.
When to see Kyoto autumn leaves in 2026: usual peak in Ohara, Kurama, Daigo-ji and Uji
Ohara and Kurama, in the northern hills, turn a little earlier; Daigo-ji and Uji peak about with central Kyoto. The usual peaks below come from the "Koyo Dayori" foliage pages on Kyoto City's official tourism site, Kyoto Kanko Navi; Uji is outside the city, so only a rough window is given.
| Area | Main spots | Usual peak | From Kyoto Station |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ohara | Sanzen-in, Jakko-in | Sanzen-in early Nov–early Dec; Jakko-in mid-Nov–early Dec | Karasuma subway + Kyoto Bus 19, about 56 min |
| Kurama and Kibune | Kurama-dera, Kifune Shrine | Kurama-dera mid–late Nov; Kifune Shrine mid-Nov | Keihan to Demachiyanagi, then Eizan Railway about 30 min |
| Daigo | Daigo-ji (Sanbo-in, Garan) | Mid–late Nov | JR to Yamashina, Tozai subway line, then a 10-min walk from Daigo Station |
| Uji | Byodo-in, Kosho-ji | About the same as central Kyoto or slightly later | JR Nara Line rapid, about 16 min |
The actual timing depends on October and November temperatures. Kyoto City's 2026 foliage survey is due to start on 30 October, so check Kyoto Kanko Navi Koyo Dayori and the tenki.jp forecast again a week before you travel. Why is Kyoto so crowded in autumn? 5 ways to avoid the crowds
Crowds concentrate at Kyoto Station, on city buses and in Higashiyama and Arashiyama. Kyoto City's advice: use trains and the subway, and don't sightsee with a suitcase.
- Trains first, buses only for the last leg: Kyoto Kanko Navi recommends taking a train or the subway to the station nearest your sight and only then a bus; in traffic, a bus can take more than twice as long as a route app suggests (Kyoto Kanko Navi transport guide).
- Don't get off at Kyoto Station: the city suggests riding on to a JR station closer to where you're going, for example Yamashina for the Tozai subway line to Higashiyama, the same line that serves Daigo-ji.
- Keep suitcases off city buses: Kyoto City's transport bureau asks visitors to use lockers or storage counters, or send bags to their hotel; drivers and station staff can restrict very large or numerous bags (Kyoto City Bus and Subway: large luggage).
- Arrive at opening time: Sanzen-in opens at 8:45 in November and Byodo-in at 8:45, and mornings are calmer. Kyoto Kanko Navi's comfort forecast predicts crowd levels by area and time of day.
- Check whether you need to book: in autumn 2026, Ruriko-in in Yase requires advance booking from 13 November to 6 December and Enko-ji in Ichijoji from 10 November to 10 December (Kyoto Kanko Navi).

How to get to Ohara for the autumn leaves: a Sanzen-in day trip
From Kyoto Station, Kyoto Kanko Navi recommends the Karasuma subway line to its last stop, Kokusaikaikan (about 20 minutes), then Kyoto Bus 19 to the "Ohara" terminus, about 56 minutes in total.
In November Sanzen-in is open 8:45–16:45, admission is ¥700 for adults, and it opens every day (Sanzen-in). The moss garden under red maples is the classic Ohara view.

Jakko-in, Hosen-in and what's different in 2026
Jakko-in, on the other side of Ohara, fits into the same day as Sanzen-in. Kyoto Kanko Navi lists Hosen-in's autumn evening illumination (Aki no Yoakari) as cancelled for 2026; check return buses on the Kyoto Bus timetable (revised 28 September 2026).
Kurama and Kibune in autumn: the Eizan Railway and the mountain trail
For Kurama, take the Keihan line to its Demachiyanagi terminus, then the Eizan Railway to Kurama, about 30 minutes (Kurama-dera access). Between Ichihara and Ninose the line passes the "maple tunnel", usually lit in autumn; check the Eizan Railway for 2026 dates.

Kurama-dera charges a ¥500 mountain entry fee (aizanhi), and the main hall is open 9:00–16:15. From the gate, the winding Tsuzuraori path climbs to the main hall in about 30 minutes, or you can take the cable car (¥200 one-way donation for adults). If you have the legs for it, continue over the mountain to Kibune:
| Section | Walking time |
|---|---|
| Kurama Station → Niomon gate | About 3 min |
| Niomon gate → main hall (Tsuzuraori path) | About 25 min |
| Main hall → Maoden | About 30 min |
| Maoden → Kifune Shrine | About 20 min |
| Kifune Shrine → Kibuneguchi Station | About 40 min (or take the bus) |
Walking times are from Kurama-dera's website; the trail has exposed roots and steps and gets slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes. Kyoto Kanko Navi lists Kifune Shrine's autumn illumination for 7–24 November 2026, which makes a good finish at dusk.
Daigo-ji autumn leaves: straight there by subway, upper Daigo closed
Daigo-ji is the simplest of the four to reach: JR from Kyoto to Yamashina on the Tokaido (Biwako) Line takes about 5 minutes, then the Tozai subway line about 10 minutes to Daigo Station, and a roughly 10-minute walk from Exit 2. From Uji, take the JR Nara Line to Rokujizo and the Tozai line about 5 minutes to Daigo (Daigo-ji access).

- Opening hours: 9:00–17:00 from 1 March to the first Sunday of December, then 9:00–16:30 until the end of February; entry closes 30 minutes before closing.
- Tickets: single-site or combined tickets for Sanbo-in, the Garan and the Reihokan; prices vary by season, see Daigo-ji.
- Kami-Daigo: the upper temple is closed until further notice because of landslide risk on the trail, so the foliage visit centres on the lower Garan and the Bentendo area.
- Night viewing: the 2025 autumn night viewing ran 22 November to 7 December; 2026 dates haven't been announced, so check the official site.
Uji in autumn: Byodo-in, Kosho-ji's Kotozaka, and Uji as a base
Uji is outside Kyoto City, about 16 minutes from JR Kyoto Station by JR Nara Line rapid (Uji City Tourism Association), or via the Keihan Uji Line from Chushojima. Byodo-in, the Uji River and the Kotozaka slope up to Kosho-ji all link up on foot.
Byodo-in is open 8:45–17:30 (last entry 17:15) and costs ¥700 for adults; the Phoenix Hall interior is an extra ¥300, with tours every 20 minutes from 9:30 to 16:10, 50 people each, first come first served (Byodo-in).

Where to stay for Kyoto autumn leaves: Kyoto, Uji or Osaka?
Kyoto City hotels are expensive in leaf season, and from 1 March 2026 Kyoto City's accommodation tax runs from ¥200 to ¥10,000 per person per night by room rate, for example ¥1,000 for rooms of ¥20,000–50,000 (Kyoto City notice). Osaka Prefecture's tax is lower (Osaka Prefecture); compare total prices for your dates.
| Base | Best for | Pros | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Kyoto (Demachiyanagi, Kitaoji) | Ohara, Kurama and Kibune | Closest to the northern hills, easy to catch the first train | High leaf-season rates, Kyoto City accommodation tax |
| Uji | Uji, Daigo-ji, Fushimi | 16 minutes to Kyoto by train, quiet evenings | More changes to reach Ohara or Kurama |
| Osaka (Yodoyabashi, Kyobashi) | Kurama (Keihan direct to Demachiyanagi), Uji (Keihan with a change) | Lots of rooms, easy to get to Kansai Airport on departure day | About an hour each way; check Keihan timetables |
Sample 4 days, 3 nights: north from Kyoto, south from Uji
| Day | Plan | What to do with your luggage |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Land at Kansai Airport in the morning → Daigo-ji or Fushimi in the afternoon | Big bags go from the airport to your Kyoto hotel |
| Day 2 | Ohara: Sanzen-in and Jakko-in | Day bag only; subway plus bus |
| Day 3 | Kurama-dera over the mountain to Kibune, illumination at dusk | Bags go from your Kyoto hotel to your Uji hotel at check-out |
| Day 4 | Byodo-in and Kosho-ji's Kotozaka → on to Osaka or fly home | Bags go from Uji to your Osaka hotel or the airport |
What to do with luggage in leaf season: keep suitcases off Kyoto city buses
In leaf season the hard part is the luggage: city buses ask riders not to bring large bags, Kyoto Station's lockers fill up, and the trails of Ohara and Kurama are no place for a wheeled case. After a long-haul flight from the US, Europe or Australia, it's easier to leave bags at your hotel or have a delivery service take them to your next hotel while you ride the trains with a day bag.
LuggAgent can collect your bags at the Kansai Airport arrivals meeting point, where an agent waits with a LuggAgent sign; airport handovers are 09:00–18:00. From a hotel, choose a pickup time between 09:00 and 11:00 when booking, leave your bags at the front desk before then and send a photo to customer support (no need to wait for the driver); they reach your next hotel by 21:00 the same day (by 18:00 with priority delivery). Your bags are photographed at pickup and delivery.
- Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or guesthouse, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one, send the full address and entry details (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 local time on the service day, and you don't need to be there.
- Allow at least 3 hours between pickup and delivery; available time slots are shown on the booking page.
- For bags going to the airport, we recommend choosing a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs; delivery between 15:00 and 21:00 has no time-slot fee, while 13:00–15:00 and 21:00–24:00 cost extra.
Routes and prices for Kyoto are on the Kyoto luggage delivery page; if you're staying in Uji, see Uji luggage delivery.

FAQ
When are the autumn leaves best in Ohara, Kurama, Daigo-ji and Uji?
Kyoto City's usual peak dates are early November to early December for Sanzen-in, mid to late November for Kurama-dera and Daigo-ji, and mid-November for Kifune Shrine. Uji is roughly the same as central Kyoto or slightly later. Check live reports a week before you go.
Can I take a suitcase on Kyoto city buses in leaf season?
It's best not to. Kyoto City's transport bureau asks passengers not to bring large luggage onto city buses, and drivers can restrict very large or numerous bags. Use trains and the subway instead, or store or send your bags to your hotel first.
What's the fastest way from Kyoto Station to Ohara?
Take the Karasuma subway line to Kokusaikaikan (about 20 minutes), then Kyoto Bus 19 to "Ohara", about 56 minutes in total. Kyoto Bus 17 runs direct from Kyoto Station, but it often gets stuck in leaf-season traffic and takes longer.
Is it practical to stay in Uji or Osaka for Kyoto's autumn leaves?
Yes. Uji is about 16 minutes from Kyoto Station by JR rapid and one subway change from Daigo-ji; from Osaka, the Keihan line runs direct to Demachiyanagi for the Eizan Railway to Kurama.
Does Daigo-ji have an autumn night viewing in 2026?
Daigo-ji's 2025 autumn night viewing ran from 22 November to 7 December, 18:00–20:50, for ¥1,300 (junior high school age and over). As of October, 2026 dates have not been announced, so check Daigo-ji's official website.
