Naha Airport to Okinawa's Northern Resorts: Send Your Bags Ahead Before Picking Up the Rental Car (incl. JUNGLIA)
Driving from Naha Airport to northern Okinawa (Nago, Motobu, Nakijin) takes about 2 hours on the expressway: the Okinawa Commemorative National Government Park lists about 2 hours to Ocean Expo Park by expressway and about 2 hours 50 minutes on ordinary roads, and JUNGLIA, which opened in July 2025, lists about 90 minutes by car from Naha. Most rental-car offices sit outside the airport and are reached by shuttle bus. If you hand your big bags over in the arrivals hall and have them delivered to your northern hotel, you can pick up the car empty-handed, stop at the Churaumi Aquarium or Kouri Island on the way, and collect your luggage at the hotel that evening.
Key takeaways
- Naha Airport to Ocean Expo Park (home of the Churaumi Aquarium): about 2 hours by expressway, about 2 hours 50 minutes on ordinary roads; direct buses take about 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes.
- The Okinawa Monorail (Yui Rail) runs only from Naha Airport to Tedako-Uranishi, 19 stations in all, and does not reach the north; you need a car or a bus.
- Rental-car shuttles: at Nippon Rent-A-Car, for example, you board at stop 11-A outside the domestic terminal and ride about 10–20 minutes to the office; in heavy traffic a single shuttle trip can take around an hour.
- JUNGLIA is in Nakijin Village, about 90 minutes from Naha by car or about 120 minutes by direct bus; in-park coin lockers cost ¥800 (L) and ¥500 (M), and storage for bags too big for a locker is limited.
- Same-day delivery works as "Naha Airport → northern hotel": hand over your bags at the airport and they reach your hotel by 21:00 the same day (by 18:00 with priority delivery), with at least 3 hours between pickup and delivery.
How long does it take from Naha Airport to northern Okinawa? Car vs bus
Driving is the most flexible and the most common choice; if you don't drive, direct buses run from the airport to the north. The times below are the approximate official figures. Traffic changes them, so leave extra time, especially in weekday rush hours.
| Option | Travel time | Best for | Large-luggage notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car + Okinawa Expressway | About 2 hours to Ocean Expo Park | Travellers stopping at sights on the way or staying several nights up north | You drag your bags onto the rental shuttle first; a small car's boot may not fit them all |
| Rental car on ordinary roads | About 2 hours 50 minutes to Ocean Expo Park | Travellers taking the west coast slowly | Same as above |
| Direct buses (Yanbaru Express, Highway Bus 117, Airport Limousine Bus, Churaumi Liner) | About 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes to Kinen Koen-mae | Non-drivers heading to the Motobu Peninsula | You lift your own bags on and off, and still have to get from the stop to the hotel |
| JUNGLIA direct bus (JUNGLIA Express) | About 120 minutes from Naha | Travellers going straight to JUNGLIA | Some runs are suspended from 1 November to 20 December 2026; check before you travel |
Limousine, shuttle and highway buses to central and northern Okinawa leave from bus stops ① and ② on the 1st floor at Naha Airport. Routes and timetables are on the Naha Airport website and the Ocean Expo Park access page.

Can you take the monorail to northern Okinawa?
No. The Okinawa Monorail (Yui Rail) runs only between Naha Airport and Tedako-Uranishi, 19 stations serving Naha and Urasoe. To reach Nago, Motobu or Nakijin you need a car, a bus or a taxi; see the Yui Rail website.
Why send your luggage ahead before picking up the rental car?
Because renting a car at Naha Airport usually starts with dragging your suitcases onto a shuttle bus. Most rental offices are outside the airport. At Nippon Rent-A-Car, for example, you leave the domestic terminal's 1st-floor exit, cross the road to stop 11-A and ride about 10–20 minutes to the office. The company also warns that in heavy traffic the shuttle can take around an hour each way, so allow time for both pickup and return.
For a family with two or three large suitcases, queuing for the shuttle, lifting bags on and off and squeezing them into the boot is often the most tiring part of arrival day. With your luggage sent ahead, the day can look like this:
| Time | Bags sent ahead | Bags with you |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Land and hand your bags to the agent in the arrivals hall | Land and drag your bags to stop 11-A |
| Before noon | Ride the shuttle empty-handed, pick up the car and head north | Queue for the shuttle, pick up the car, load the bags |
| Afternoon | Stop at the Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island on the way | Bags stay in the car while you sightsee, so you keep an eye on it |
| Evening | Check in up north; bags arrive by 21:00 (by 18:00 with priority) | Unload at the hotel and check in |
Departure day works the same way in reverse: hand your bags over at the hotel in the morning, enjoy the afternoon empty-handed, return the car, and your luggage goes straight to Naha Airport.

Going to JUNGLIA with luggage: what are your options?
JUNGLIA is not a place to bring a large suitcase. The park has paid coin lockers inside the entrance gate, L size ¥800 (18 lockers) and M size ¥500 (36 lockers); bags too big for a locker can be left at a paid storage area nearby, but space is limited. The easier plan is to stay in the north the night before, or have your bags delivered straight to that night's hotel.
JUNGLIA OKINAWA opened on 25 July 2025 in Nakijin Village, beside the Yanbaru forest of northern Okinawa.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| By car from Naha Airport or central Naha | About 90 minutes |
| Parking | Park car park ¥2,000 per car; partner car park ¥800 (shuttle about 10 minutes) |
| Direct bus | About 120 minutes from Naha; board at bus stop ① on the 1st floor of Naha Airport |
| Tickets | Ticket types and prices change; see the official JUNGLIA site |
| Opening hours | Published monthly on the official calendar; from January 2027 the park is, in principle, closed every Monday for maintenance |
| Luggage storage | Coin lockers L ¥800, M ¥500; paid storage for large bags, limited space |
Inside the entrance gate there is also a Sagawa Express delivery service; the park says bags handed in by 14:00 can reach eligible hotels the same day. Check the official JUNGLIA website for current prices and transport.

Changing hotels in Okinawa: how to move luggage from the south or centre to the north
Many travellers spend one or two nights in Naha first, then move to a resort in Onna or Motobu. Luggage delivery uses the areas below, so check which one your hotel is in before you book:
| Area | Municipalities | Typical stays |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Okinawa | Naha and the south | Kokusai-dori area and central Naha hotels |
| Central Okinawa | Urasoe, Ginowan, Chatan, Yomitan, Onna, Kin, Ginoza and others | Chatan's American Village, Onna coast resorts |
| Northern Okinawa | Nago, Motobu, Nakijin (incl. Yagaji, Kouri and Sesoko islands) | Nago, Motobu Peninsula and Sesoko resorts, the JUNGLIA area |
| Northern Okinawa (Yanbaru) | Kunigami, Ogimi, Higashi | Stays in the Yanbaru forest area |
Note that Onna counts as "central", not northern. Common hotel changes are Naha (south) → Motobu (north) or Onna (central) → Motobu (north): pick a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave your bags at the first hotel's front desk before then and pick them up at the next one that evening.
Off-season and long stays in northern Okinawa: November to March
November to March is outside the main beach season, but it suits long stays and unhurried drives around the north. The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 normals give these monthly mean temperatures for Naha:
| Month | Naha monthly mean temperature |
|---|---|
| November | 22.5°C |
| December | 19.0°C |
| January | 17.3°C |
| February | 17.5°C |
| March | 19.1°C |
A week or more usually means more luggage. Split your stay into "a few nights in Naha + a few nights up north", send the big bags between hotels, and carry only what you need for the day. Staying longer in the north also spreads what you spend on food and lodging beyond Naha. For seasonal events, see the Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau's Okinawa Story.
Self-driving northern Okinawa with big suitcases: how to handle your luggage
On an Okinawa road trip, luggage is hardest on the first and last days: you drag your bags onto the rental shuttle, a small car's boot may not fit them, and on the way north the suitcases sit in the car all day while you stop at sights, which is less reassuring. On the bus, you lift your own bags on and off and still have to get from the stop to the hotel.
LuggAgent can pick up your bags at Naha Airport and deliver them to your northern hotel the same day:
- Airport pickup: after landing, go to the meeting point in the arrivals hall, where an agent holds a LuggAgent sign; the booking page offers Naha Airport pickup slots from 09:00–09:30 to 17:30–18:00.
- Same-day hotel delivery: bags reach your hotel by 21:00 the same day, or by 18:00 with priority delivery; these Okinawa routes need at least 3 hours between pickup and delivery.
- Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or guesthouse, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one, send the full address and entry details (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 local time on the service day, and you don't need to be there.
- For the return to Naha Airport, we recommend choosing a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs; photos are taken at pickup and at delivery.
For Okinawa service areas, delivery times and booking details, see Okinawa luggage delivery. Let your hotel know a delivery is coming so the front desk can receive it.
If you want to pick up the car and head north straight after landing, hand your bags over at the airport and have them sent to your northern hotel:
If you spend a few nights in Naha first, leave your bags at the Naha hotel's front desk in the morning:
