Rent a Smaller Car in Okinawa: Send Luggage to Your Hotel with LuggAgent, 4 People 5 Days Calculated
The usual logic for picking a rental car on a road trip is: lots of luggage, rent one size up. Four people with four big suitcases won't fit in a Sienta's trunk, so you bump up to a minivan like the Noah.
But think about it: is that luggage really in the car for the whole trip?
If you're staying at the same hotel in Okinawa and heading out each day and coming back, your luggage only needs to be in the car at two moments:
- Day 1: pick up bags at the airport → drive to the hotel
- Last day: check out of the hotel → drive to the airport
For the 3–5 days in between, the trunk is full of nothing, yet you pay the big-car rate every day for those two trips.
This article does one thing: it puts the delivery fee for handing your luggage to LuggAgent next to the rental money you save by dropping a class, and tells you when it pays off and when it doesn't.
1. The Short Answer
Take 4 people, 4 large suitcases, the same hotel, a 5-day rental (rental prices are the Toyota Rent a Car website's list prices):
| Staying in Naha (South Okinawa) | Noah → Sienta | Noah → Vitz-class compact |
|---|---|---|
| Rental savings | US$226 | US$400 |
| Luggage delivery (round trip, 4 bags) | US$150 | US$150 |
| Net savings | about US$76 | about US$250 |
Three takeaways:
- Dropping two classes (Noah → compact) is the big win; dropping just one may only break even on a short rental.
- The longer the trip and the more people, the better it gets, because the rental difference adds up daily while the delivery fee is fixed.
- The farther the hotel is from the airport, the higher the delivery fee: stay in the north (Nago, Motobu) or Yanbaru and dropping one class no longer pays. Calculations by area are below.
2. How Much Does Dropping One Class Save?
Toyota Rent a Car's website 24-hour base rates (in yen, including 10% tax, excluding insurance; checked 2026-10-23):
| Class | Representative models | Per 24 hours | Approx. USD (USD/JPY 158) |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 Compact | Vitz, Passo, Roomy | ¥10,340 | US$65 |
| W1 Small minivan | Sienta | ¥15,840 | US$100 |
| W2 Minivan | Voxy, Noah | ¥22,990 | US$146 |
- Noah → Sienta: saves ¥7,150 per day (about US$45)
- Noah → Vitz: saves ¥12,650 per day (about US$80)
These are the website's list prices. Comparison sites, Times, OTS and Orix are usually cheaper in practice, and the gap may narrow in the off-season; in peak season (summer vacation, Golden Week, New Year) minivans rise faster than compacts, so the gap is actually wider. Go by the prices you actually book, and plug them into the formula below yourself.
Four adults fit in a Vitz-class compact, but the trunk only holds two or three small backpacks; the more comfortable choice is the Sienta.
3. 4 People, 5 Days: The Math
Scenario: 4 people, 4 suitcases, 4 nights at a hotel in downtown Naha, a 5-day rental, driving to the Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island and Senaga Island during the day.
LuggAgent delivery fee (southern Okinawa including Naha, in USD; US$45 base for 2 bags, plus US$15 for each additional bag):
- 4 bags: 45 + 15 × 2 = US$75 one way
- Outbound (airport → hotel) + return (hotel → airport) = US$150
How much rental money you save:
| Days | Rental savings | After subtracting the US$150 delivery fee | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noah → Sienta | 3 days | ¥21,450 (US$136) | −US$14 |
| 5 days | ¥35,750 (US$226) | +US$76 | |
| 7 days | ¥50,050 (US$317) | +US$167 | |
| Noah → Vitz-class | 3 days | ¥37,950 (US$240) | +US$90 |
| 5 days | ¥63,250 (US$400) | +US$250 | |
| 7 days | ¥88,550 (US$560) | +US$410 |
Break-even: dropping just one class (Noah → Sienta) needs about 3.3 days of rental to pay off; dropping two classes needs about 1.9 days.
What if you stay in another area? The delivery fee varies with the hotel location:
| Hotel location | 4 bags one way | Round trip | 5 days Noah → Sienta | 5 days Noah → Vitz-class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naha, Tomigusuku, Itoman (South) | US$75 | US$150 | +US$76 | +US$250 |
| Chatan, Yomitan, southern Onna (Central) | US$82 | US$164 | +US$62 | +US$236 |
| Onna, Nago, Motobu (North) | US$129 | US$258 | −US$32 | +US$142 |
| Kunigami, Ogimi, Higashi (Yanbaru) | US$129 | US$258 | −US$32 | +US$142 |
The area is determined by the address on the order page; the table above is only an illustration.
4. When This Doesn't Make Sense
To be honest, don't force this just to save on the rental in these cases:
- Changing hotels every day: your luggage has to travel with you every day and be in the car anyway, so a smaller car won't fit it.
- Renting for only 1–2 days: the rental difference doesn't add up, and the fixed delivery fee won't pay for itself.
- 2 people with little luggage: you can already afford a small car, so there's no class to drop.
- Staying in the north (Onna, Nago, Motobu) or Yanbaru and dropping only one class: the round trip costs US58, and over 5 days dropping one class costs about US$32 more.
- You want the space and comfort of a bigger car anyway: this article only counts money, not comfort.
It suits: 3–4 or more people, staying at the same hotel for 3 or more nights, driving around during the day.
5. How to Arrange Your Luggage
Day 1 (airport → hotel)
- Hand your luggage to us at the airport meeting point.
- Head straight to the rental company to pick up your car and go out exploring, no need to stop at the hotel first.
- Your luggage is delivered to the hotel front desk within the agreed time window, so it's already there when you check in that evening.
Last day (hotel → airport)
- At check-out, leave your luggage with the hotel front desk and we'll pick it up at the hotel.
- Drive around with just your day bags until the afternoon, return the car, and get to the airport; your luggage will be waiting at the agreed spot in the airport.
For the last day's timing and airport delivery window, go by the order page, and leave yourself a buffer before returning the car.
6. FAQ
Q1: I don't want to pay for luggage delivery, I just want to rent a big car. Is that okay? Of course. This article is for people who want to spend their budget elsewhere, not a suggestion that you have to use the service.
Q2: Will a small car feel cramped? Four adults have enough seats in a Vitz-class compact, but the luggage won't fit, which is why the luggage needs to be sent ahead. If you want more comfort, choose a Sienta.
Q3: Using list prices for rentals, isn't that an overestimate? Yes, comparison sites often have lower prices. So subtract the daily rates of the two car types you actually booked, multiply by the number of days, then subtract the delivery fee. If the result is above 0, it pays off.
Q4: How far in advance do I need to book? For hotel and airport orders, book by 11:00 the day before the service date at the latest; booking 30 or more days ahead gets a 5% early-bird discount on the delivery fee.
Q5: What if my luggage is lost or damaged? Each bag comes with insurance of up to US$500, covering luggage delay and loss; you can add coverage of up to US$3,000 per bag. Cosmetic or non-structural damage such as scratches, dents, wheels and zippers is not covered. Each bag must weigh no more than 32 kg and have a total length + width + height of no more than 180 cm.
