Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo and Otaru with Luggage: Flights, Airport Trains and Same-Day Bag Delivery

Get an instant luggage delivery quote Get a Quote

Going from Tokyo to Sapporo with luggage is easiest by plane: about 1.5 hours from Haneda, or roughly 2 hours from Osaka, to New Chitose Airport. From there, JR Rapid Airport trains reach Sapporo in 33–43 minutes for ¥1,230, and some run through to Otaru (from 73 minutes, ¥2,040). The train from Tokyo takes about 8 hours. The awkward parts are checking bags in, waiting at baggage claim and squeezing suitcases onto a busy airport train. Alternatively, send your bags hotel to hotel the same day and fly with just a carry-on.

Key takeaways

How do you get from Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo? Plane vs train

For almost everyone, flying is the way from Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo: the flight is short, and New Chitose Airport has its own JR station. The train is a scenic all-day trip, with a change at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and big bags to manage both times. Times and fares below were checked on a route-search site and the JR Hokkaido website in October 2026.

Route Journey time Adult fare With luggage
Fly from Haneda (or Narita) to New Chitose, then JR to Sapporo About 1.5 h in the air + 33–43 min by train Airfare varies; JR ¥1,230 Bag drop before the flight, baggage claim after it, then the airport train
Fly from Itami, Kansai or Kobe to New Chitose, then JR to Sapporo About 2 h in the air + 33–43 min by train Airfare varies; JR ¥1,230 Same as above
Rail from Tokyo: Hokkaido Shinkansen + Limited Express Hokuto About 8 h, one change About ¥30,000 with reserved seats You carry everything through two trains and a transfer

The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, so there is no direct bullet train to Sapporo yet. If you have a rail pass and want the views, the train works; with large suitcases and limited time, flying is simpler.

Flying domestic with big luggage: what to expect

A domestic flight in Japan is quick, but checked bags add time at both ends: you drop them before security and wait for them at the carousel after landing. On a busy morning that can add up to an hour to a 1.5-hour flight, and you still have to roll everything onto the train.

Checked baggage: whose rules apply?

Each airline sets its own allowance for checked and carry-on bags, and it often differs by fare type. Free allowances on domestic flights can be smaller than what you had on your long-haul flight to Japan, so don't assume the same limits apply. Check your airline's official baggage rules for weight, size and number of pieces before you pack.

After landing at New Chitose

New Chitose Airport Station is underground, directly connected to the terminal building. Rapid Airport trains run six an hour in the daytime, and car 4 has reserved seats if you want a guaranteed place for yourself. Trains fill up at busy times, and JR Hokkaido limits each passenger to two pieces of luggage, each up to 250 cm in combined length, width and height (no side over 2 m) and 30 kg. If you have a few hours before heading into town, see the side trips in Things to Do Near New Chitose Airport: Chitose Aquarium and Lake Shikotsu on Arrival or Departure Day.

How to get from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo and Otaru

JR is the most direct way from New Chitose Airport to both cities: Sapporo is one train ride, and some Rapid Airport services continue to Otaru with no change. If your train ends at Sapporo, or at Teine or Hoshimi, change at Sapporo for an Otaru-bound train.

Section Train Time Adult one-way fare
New Chitose Airport → Sapporo Special Rapid / Rapid / Semi-Rapid Airport 33 / 37 / 43 min ¥1,230
New Chitose Airport → Otaru Rapid Airport through to Otaru From 73 min (about 75–90 min) ¥2,040
Sapporo → Otaru Rapid Airport or local train on the Hakodate Line About 35–45 min ¥800

Fastest times come from JR Hokkaido; fares were checked on a route-search site in October 2026 and may change.

Staying in Otaru: why luggage is harder there

Otaru is a small port city where the sights are best on foot, and that's exactly why suitcases are a nuisance there. According to Hokkaido's official tourism site, the Otaru Canal, completed in 1923, is about a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. Its stone-paved path is lined with 63 gas lamps and old warehouses. The town rises steeply from the waterfront, so many hotels and guesthouses sit on slopes. Wheeling two large bags over cobbles and up hills is slow work, and in winter the pavements are often icy.

Many travellers base themselves in Sapporo and visit Otaru as a day trip. If you'd rather stay a night by the canal, the cleanest plan is to arrive with only a day bag. Event and seasonal information is on the Otaru Tourism Association website.

Visiting in winter (December to March)

Winter is a popular time for non-skiers too, and it's when luggage is hardest to move. The Sapporo Snow Festival runs from February 4 to 11, 2027, according to the official site. The Otaru Snow Light Path candle festival is usually held in early to mid February, but its 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026, so check the official announcements. Travellers from Australia often arrive during their December–January summer holidays, straight into Hokkaido's snow. Hotels fill early around the festival, and rolling a suitcase through slush between station and hotel is a common complaint.

Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo with luggage: 3 options compared

You can take your bags on the plane, ship them by courier, or have them taken hotel to hotel the same day. The right choice depends on how much you're carrying and whether you need the bags that night.

Option How your bags travel Best for Watch out for

Ship them by home-delivery courier (takkyubin) Picked up from your hotel and delivered to the next address Extra bags you won't need for a day or two Not same-day; long-distance deliveries usually take a day or more, so you need essentials in a day bag

Same-day luggage delivery from Tokyo or Osaka to Sapporo and Otaru

The hassle of this trip isn't the flight, it's the luggage around it: bag drop, the carousel, a busy airport train, then hills and snow at the other end. Taking bags on the plane also means fitting everything within your airline's baggage allowance.

FAQ

How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Sapporo?

By air, it's about 1.5 hours from Haneda to New Chitose Airport, plus 33–43 minutes by JR Rapid Airport into Sapporo. Add bag drop, security and baggage claim, and allow about half a day door to door. By train via the Hokkaido Shinkansen and Limited Express Hokuto, the trip takes about 8 hours.

Can I take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sapporo?

Not all the way. The Hokkaido Shinkansen ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, where you change to the Limited Express Hokuto for Sapporo. The whole trip takes about 8 hours and costs about ¥30,000 with reserved seats, so most visitors fly.

How do I get from New Chitose Airport to Otaru?

Take the JR Rapid Airport; some trains run straight through to Otaru, the fastest in 73 minutes, for ¥2,040. Otherwise change at Sapporo, where Otaru is another 35–45 minutes and ¥800. Trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi don't go to Otaru.

How much luggage can I check on a domestic flight in Japan?

It depends on your airline and fare type, and domestic allowances can be smaller than on international flights. Check your airline's official baggage rules before packing. To avoid the question, you can send your suitcases hotel to hotel and fly with only a carry-on.

Can my luggage go from my Tokyo hotel to my Sapporo hotel on the same day?

Yes. With LuggAgent, choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave your bags at your Tokyo or Osaka hotel front desk before then, and they'll reach your Sapporo or Otaru hotel by 21:00 the same day. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or guesthouse, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one (you don't need to be there), send the full address and entry details by 13:00 local time on the service day.
