Universal Studios Japan + Kyoto Luggage Guide: Check Out in Kyoto, Go Straight to USJ, No Big Bags in the Park

Many people planning a Kansai trip split their nights between Kyoto and Osaka, with a day at Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in between. The itinerary itself works well. The trouble is hotel-swap day:

• You check out of your Kyoto hotel at 11:00, and your suitcase is still with you.
• You want to spend the day at USJ, but large suitcases are not allowed inside the park.
• Your Osaka hotel doesn't let you check in until the afternoon.

This guide splits the trip into two legs, "Kyoto → USJ → Osaka hotel" and "last day at USJ → Kansai Airport", and shows you the easiest way to handle your bags on each.

1. USJ Luggage Rules and Lockers

Large suitcases are not allowed inside the park, so you need to deal with them before security.

Outside the park, there are usually two options:

• Large lockers outside the park: about ¥1,000 for large and about ¥1,500 for extra-large. Only the extra-large size fits a suitcase.
• Luggage storage shops at Universal CityWalk: about ¥1,500 for large luggage (total of three sides 141 cm or more).

The catch with lockers is that large sizes fill up easily on busy days. You also have to remember all day that you need to come back for your bag in the evening, and when you leave the park you still have to drag it to the station.

If you're staying near USJ that night, or heading to a hotel in Osaka, sending your bags straight to the hotel means you don't have to think about them all day.

2. Kyoto to USJ: How to Get There

3. Hotel-Swap Day: Check Out in Kyoto → Play at USJ → Bags Already at the Hotel

4. Last Day: Play at USJ Until the Afternoon, Bags Sent Straight to Kansai Airport

Many people skip USJ on their last day because after checkout there's nowhere to leave their bags, and they have a flight to catch.

• Your bags are delivered to your Kyoto hotel before 21:00, so you can head straight out sightseeing.

Price: Kansai Airport → Kyoto US$88 (2 bags), plus US$19 for each additional bag.

If you land in the evening, the airport pickup window will have passed. We suggest taking your bags to the hotel yourself that night, and using us on the day you change hotels.

7. Sample 5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Kyoto

• Land during the day: hand over bags at the airport 09:00–18:00 → delivered to your Kyoto hotel while you head straight to Kiyomizu-dera and Gion
• Land in the evening: take your bags to the hotel yourself

Day 2–3: Kyoto

• Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, with your bags left at the hotel

Day 4: Kyoto → USJ

• Hand bags to your Kyoto hotel front desk before 11:00 → delivered to your USJ-area hotel
• Head to Universal Studios Japan empty-handed, play until evening, and your bags are already there when you get back to the hotel

8. FAQ

Q1: Can I leave a suitcase inside USJ? Large suitcases are not allowed inside the park and must be stored outside. On busy days the large lockers outside the park are often full, so we recommend sending your bags to your hotel first.

Q2: How long does it take to get from Kyoto to USJ? About 45–55 minutes by JR, with a transfer to the Yumesaki Line at Osaka Station.

Q3: What time will my bags arrive at the hotel? For hotel delivery you can choose before 21:00, or before 18:00 (extra US$35). For hotel pickup, please hand your bags to the front desk before 11:00.

Q4: How far in advance should I book? For hotel and airport orders, book by 11:00 at least 1 day before the service date. If the pickup or delivery location is a vacation rental, book by 11:00 at least 3 days before the service date. Book 30 or more days ahead and you get a 5% early-bird discount on the fare.

Q5: Can I use it if I'm staying in a vacation rental or Airbnb? Yes, but each end that is a vacation rental adds US$25, and the booking deadline is earlier (see Q4).

Q6: What if my luggage is lost or damaged? Every bag comes with insurance of up to US$500, covering luggage delay and loss. If you need higher coverage, you can add it per bag, up to US$3,000. Cosmetic or non-structural damage such as scratches, dents, and damage to wheels or zippers is not covered. Each bag must weigh no more than 32 kg, and its length + width + height must not exceed 180 cm.
