Get an instant luggage delivery quote Get a Quote

The things to do near Naha Airport fit neatly into your last day in Okinawa. Senagajima, a small island joined to the coast by a sea road, is about 10 minutes from the airport by car: its white Umikaji Terrace (10:00–21:00) overlooks the runway, and planes pass right overhead. Ten minutes further south in Toyosaki are Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa (10:00–20:00, about 18 minutes by bus) and the iias Okinawa Toyosaki mall, near some rental-car offices. Send your suitcases from the hotel straight to the airport and the half day is hands-free.

A travel enclave is LuggAgent's name for a town right next to an airport that most travellers pass straight through. Hand your luggage to LuggAgent on arrival or departure day and you can explore it hands-free for half a day — an airport side trip.

Rental-car return day timeline: from a northern resort to your flight

On a typical rental-car return day you check out up north in the morning, drive south on the expressway, spend the early afternoon around Toyosaki and Senagajima, and return the car at least 2–3 hours before your flight. The official figure for Ocean Expo Park (Motobu) to Naha Airport is about 2 hours by expressway. The timeline below assumes an evening flight around 19:30.

Time Where What you do Your luggage
08:30 Northern resort Check out and hand your suitcases to the front desk for delivery to the airport Already on its way; you keep a day bag
09:00–11:00 Okinawa Expressway Drive south, about 2 hours Boot nearly empty
11:00–13:30 iias Okinawa Toyosaki or Ashibinaa Lunch and shopping; watch take-offs from Chura-Sun Beach Shopping bags go in the car
13:30–15:30 Senagajima About 10 minutes by car; free parking; planes, terrace cafés Nothing to watch over
15:30–16:30 Rental office (Toyosaki area) Refuel, return the car, take the shuttle Only a day bag and purchases
16:30–17:30 Naha Airport Allow up to an hour for the shuttle in traffic —
17:30 onwards Departure hall Collect your suitcases, do the tax-free customs check, check in Recommended: delivery at least 2 hours before departure

Late flight: return the car first, then catch the sunset

If your flight leaves after about 20:30, you can return the car in the afternoon and still see the sunset. From the airport, take a taxi or bus to Senagajima (TK04 runs only on weekends and holidays), watch the sun go down, then come back by taxi or bus. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan lists Naha sunset at about 17:56 on 21 October, 17:37 on 1 December and 19:25 on 21 June (NAOJ).

Midday flight: pick one stop

With a flight around 13:00–14:00, an early start from the north leaves time for only one stop. Ashibinaa opens at 10:00 and is about 15 minutes from the airport, so it suits a short last shopping run. Return the car by about 11:00.

How do you get to Senagajima Umikaji Terrace? Car, bus and taxi

Senagajima is easiest by car. It is about 10 minutes from Naha Airport along the sea road, and parking is free for Umikaji Terrace visitors (Umikaji Terrace). The Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau gives about 15 minutes by car from the airport and about 25 minutes from Kokusai Street (Visit Okinawa Japan). Without a car, there are two bus options from stop ⑥ at Naha Airport.

Option Route Time Adult fare
Car or taxi Sea road from the airport About 10–15 min Parking free for Umikaji Terrace visitors
Bus TK04 Senagajima Hotel Airport Shuttle Naha Airport ⑥ → Akamine Station → Senagajima Hotel About 20 min ¥250 (weekends and holidays only)
Bus TK02 Umikaji Liner Naha Airport ⑥ → Senagajima → Ashibinaa → iias Check the timetable About ¥250 to Senagajima

TK04 runs six times a day in each direction, from 11:25 to 18:10 from the airport and 10:45 to 17:40 from Senagajima, and does not accept transit IC cards (Tokyo Bus TK04 timetable). For TK02 times, see the Tokyo Bus route page. Timetables can change, so check before you travel.

What to do on Senagajima: planes, terraces and hot springs

Senagajima is a small island, about 1.5 km around, and it is best known for planes. Climb to the observation plaza and jets pass close overhead as they take off from or land at Naha Airport. Umikaji Terrace is a cluster of white buildings stepping down the slope to the sea, with dozens of cafés, restaurants and shops. On the hilltop, Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel has hot springs with views of the sea and the runway; check its official site for day-use options. The terraces are full of stairs, so this is no place to drag a suitcase.

Ashibinaa outlet and iias Okinawa Toyosaki: shopping before you return the car

Ashibinaa and iias are both in Toyosaki, a few minutes apart, and on weekends and holidays a free shuttle bus links them. Ashibinaa is an open-air outlet mall with lockers and a luggage counter. iias is a large indoor mall right next to Toyosaki Chura-Sun Beach, where planes climbing out of Naha Airport pass overhead.

Tax-free shopping from November 2026: what changes for your luggage

From 1 November 2026, you pay consumption tax at the shop and get it back after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan. Within 90 days of purchase, show your passport at a customs kiosk at the departure airport, carrying all the goods on that receipt. You can't do this after you've checked in your bags (Japan Tourism Agency). Keep outlet purchases in your hand luggage, or pack them only after the customs check.

How much time should you allow to return a rental car at Naha Airport?

Allow at least 2–3 hours between returning the car and your departure. Most rental offices for Naha Airport are off-airport, and you ride a shuttle bus to the terminal after drop-off. One major company's Toyosaki office (Tomigusuku) is about 20 minutes from the airport by shuttle, and it warns that the trip can take around an hour in traffic (Nippon Rent-A-Car). Returns and shuttles are busiest in the late afternoon.

  1. Check your rental office's address and return hours the day before, and add it to your navigation.
  2. Refuel near the office if your contract requires a full tank. Rules differ by company, so check your agreement.
  3. Before you hand back the keys, check the boot, glovebox and seat pockets for anything left behind.
  4. After the shuttle drops you at the terminal, allow time for check-in, the tax-free customs check and security.

What to do with your luggage on rental-car return day: 3 options compared

On return day, your luggage is mostly a problem of timing: your bags have to come out of the car at the rental office, go onto the shuttle with you, and stay out of sight in a parked car while you sightsee. Senagajima's terraces are all stairs, and Ashibinaa's lockers only take bags up to about 87 cm high.

Option How your bags travel Best for Watch out for
Keep them in the car In the boot all day, unloaded at the rental office Small bags only Bags visible in a parked car; lifting them onto the shuttle; a small car's boot may be full
Use a locker or counter at the mall Left at Ashibinaa while you shop Bags that fit a locker, or a short stop Lockers are same-day only (10:00–20:00); you still have to take the bags to the airport
Send them from the hotel to the airport Handed over at the hotel, collected at the airport Checking out up north or in Naha and sightseeing all day Book in advance; note the delivery-time rules

LuggAgent picks up bags at your hotel's front desk and delivers them to Naha Airport (we recommend a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs), with photos taken at pickup and at delivery. When booking, choose a pickup time between 09:00 and 11:00 and leave the bags at the front desk before then. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at a guesthouse or Airbnb, the driver meets you in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00), so be there with your bags. These Okinawa routes need at least 3 hours between pickup and delivery. Okinawa is divided into southern (Naha and the south), central (including Onna and Chatan) and northern (Nago, Motobu, Nakijin) areas; see Okinawa luggage delivery.

If you check out of a resort in Nago, Motobu or Nakijin and drive south via Ashibinaa and Senagajima, your bags go straight from the hotel to the airport:

FAQ

What is a travel enclave?

A travel enclave is LuggAgent's name for a town right next to an airport that most travellers pass straight through. Hand your luggage to LuggAgent on arrival or departure day and you can explore it hands-free for half a day — an airport side trip. Senagajima, about 10 minutes by car from Naha Airport, is a textbook example.

How do I get from Naha Airport to Senagajima?

By car or taxi, it's about 10–15 minutes along the sea road, and parking is free for Umikaji Terrace visitors. By bus, take TK04 from stop ⑥ (about 20 minutes, ¥250, weekends and holidays only) or the TK02 Umikaji Liner (about ¥250).

Can you watch planes and the sunset from Senagajima?

Yes. Senagajima sits right beside Naha Airport, and from the observation plaza jets pass close overhead. Sunset in Naha is around 17:40–18:05 from October to January and about 19:25 in late June, so a sunset visit works best with a late flight.

Can I leave a suitcase at Ashibinaa?

Yes, within limits. Ashibinaa's coin lockers cost ¥200–500, can be used only on the day (10:00–20:00), and the largest is 87.2 cm high. Bags that don't fit can be left at the Smile Factory counter (shop No. 355) for ¥500 each.

If my suitcase is delivered to the airport, how do I claim the tax refund on outlet purchases?

From 1 November 2026, take the goods to a customs kiosk at the departure airport before you check in your bags; you can't do it once they're checked. Collect your delivered suitcase, complete the customs check with every item on the receipt, then check in.
